ACIDIC WELL WATER
IRON ODOR HARDNESS
Acidity of water is measured on a pH scale of 0-14, with 7 being neutral. A pH value below 7.0 is acidic and will corrode copper plumbing, brass fixtures, heating elements, and steel tanks. The result of this corrosion is a blue-green stain on sinks and tubs.
There are two treatments for acid water - a natural mineral Acid Neutralizer, or a Chemical Feed System injecting a caustic chemical. Contrary to popular myth, the natural mineral neutralizer will neutralize pH levels down to 4.0 with proper system sizing and mineral ratios.

Natural mineral Acid Neutralizer
This is a polyglass tank filled with calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide. Water flows through the mineral bed is neutralized, thus preventing associated corrosion throughout the entire home. An automatic backwash control valve will rinse the mineral bed periodically. This system eliminates homeowner maintenance.
Success of this system is possible with a strong, automatic back washing control valve. Up flow Neutralizers and Manual units fail to perform long term when the mineral bed is not kept loose and clean. Once or twice yearly the minerals are replenished by Water Doctor technicians. Removal of fouled minerals in the tank is crucial when performing the mineral service. New minerals should not be added, until
fouled minerals are removed (if applicable) and the remaining mineral bed probed. For this reason, we do not sell "port hole or dome hole tanks".
Depending on hardness levels in your water, a Softener may be desired. Our sales representative will discuss the need for a Softener and it's benefits.

Chemical Feed System
This system usually consists of a Feed pump mounted on a Solution Tank, a water Meter, and a separate Mixing Tank. A quality system should include a "proportional, metered" feed pump which injects an accurate dose of chemical according to water usage. For pH levels below 6.0, a Mixing Tank must follow injection "contact" time. Systems which do not include these features make it difficult for the homeowner to maintain a neutral pH level.
With this system it is important to know:
Relies primarily on homeowner maintenance.
Chemicals are caustic - homeowner should wear gloves and protective eyewear.
Monthly or bi-monthly addition of chemicals is usually necessary.
Chemical may create a "slick" feeling of the water.
No "hardness" is added to the water.
We use this system for commercial applications; natural mineral systems
are available for our residential clients.
