INFORMATION ON VARIOUS CONTAMINANTS
One of the most common questions asked by our clients is "How safe is my drinking water?" If you have Public (municipal) water supply, you may request information from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by calling their drinking water hotline (1-800-426-4791). You may also request a copy of their pamphlet titled Water On Tap: A Consumer's Guide to the Nation's Drinking Water (EPA 815-K-97-002). This informational piece answers frequently asked questions regarding our drinking water. EPA has issued drinking water standards for more than 80 contaminants and requires municipal water suppliers to comply with maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). Some municipal suppliers will provide the public with a copy of their latest report on water test results. It may be helpful to look on your water bill for a phone number and ask for the appropriate department.
Primary (safety) issues on private well water commonly include Bacteria, Nitrates, Lead, Radon and Radium. EPA suggests well water users test annually for Bacteria and Nitrate. Listed below are links on contaminants which MAY be found in private and public water supplies.
