Water - Our Most Precious Resource
Earth's first inhabitants drank the same water you drink. The water present on Earth today is the same water that was formed with the planet itself. The amount of water cannot be increased or decreased. As you may know, 75% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. However, less than 3%
is suitable for consumption.

The water story begins in the upper clouds where water exists as vapor particles. Particles combine and fall to earth as rain and snow. As the water sweeps the air, splashes to the ground and seeps into the soil, it picks up minerals, gasses, solids, chemicals and bacteria. Seventy percent (70%) of this water evaporates into the atmosphere before seeping into the ground and returns to the skies where it begins the cycle again. This continuous cycle of precipitation and evaporation is the hydrological cycle whereby we receive our water. About 10% of the total water in this cycle runs off into ponds, lakes and rivers. Another 20% seeps into the soil becoming groundwater.
How Water Becomes Contaminated
Underground, water travels through rock and soil where it can attract minerals or contaminants and carry them to private and community wells. Chemicals are dumped by industry which find their way into our ground water. Agricultural pesticides and highway de-icing are among many other common practices that also can contaminate water. Water can become contaminated while traveling through the water lines from your municipal water plant to your home. Lead and asbestos-cement pipes may allow substances to leach into the water. Chlorine used to disinfect the water reacts with organic matter and create Trihalomethanes (THMs) which are known carcinogens. In addition, parasites such as Cryptosporidium are resistant to municipal treatment, and may find their way to your drinking water. Affordable Water offers solutions to these problems - offering clean, healthy water.
